Growth Form: Compact to slender, erect and spreading shrubs, sometimes tree-like, occasionally dwarfed, trailing form in bogs.

Stems: Stems 0.9–3(–5) m long.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, often closely spaced, occasionally more widely spaced. Blades variable in shape and size, lanceolate–oblong, oblong, or lanceolate to elliptic or ovate–elliptic, 4–10(–14) mm long, 1.5–5(–6) mm wide, xeromorphic. Apex mucronate or with an awn up to ca. 1 mm long. Base subsessile. gradually tapering to the subsessile, usually puberulent base. Upper surfaces dull or glossy, glabrous except often puberulent toward base; lower surfaces usually glaucous between veins; thin or thick, coriaceous. Margins ± minutely serulate–ciliate throughout or at base, ± revolute, often scarious. Lower surface with 7–13 conspicuous veins. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary, peduncles ca. 1.5–3 mm long, each flower subtended by 2 bracts, covered by ca. 5–9 imbricate bracteoles. Flowers bisexual (perfect) or unisexual (and then plants gynodioecious), small, actinomorphic. Calyx of 5 sepals, coriaceous, similar to but larger than bracteoles, ovate, ca. 1.2–1.7 mm long, margins scarious and usually minutely ciliate, distinct, imbricate, persistent. Corolla urceolate, 5-lobed, white to pale pink, (2.5–)3.5–4(–4.5) mm long, the lobes spreading to recurved, valvate in bud, glabrous or pubescent on inner surface. Stamens as many as and opposite the corolla lobes, inserted near top of corolla tube and completely included to partly exserted; filaments short, filiform; anthers 1–1.5 mm long, monothecal, opening by a longitudinal slit. Pollen shed in tetrads. Ovary superior, 5–8-celled, placentation axile; ovules 1 per cell, anatropous; style 1, slender; stigma capitate.

Fruit: Fruit dark red to pink or sometimes white; dry and mealy; depressed–globose; stylar base prominent at apex; 4–6 mm wide; mesocarp fleshy; endocarp bony. Seeds pale brown; ovoid; ca. 0.2 mm long; seed coat thin; endosperm copious and oily.

Ploidy: 2n = 20

Habitat: Mesic forest to open areas of low elevation or montane wet forest; fog swept alpine shrubland; and bogs; rarely windward coastal sites.

Elevation Range: 15–3,230 m.

Uses and Culture

USES

  • Leaves of the pūkiawe or ‘a‘ali‘i mahu are ground with salt, mixed with water, and inhaled through the nose to treat congestion (holopani upe nui) (Chun 1994:3–4).

  • The fruit often used in lei (Abbott 1992:126); when ‘ali‘i wished to mingle with commoners (with no harm to them or himself), would be smudged with smoke from pūkiawe while kahuna chanted for "dispensation" (Degener 1930:247), "this is the plant that a person would burn to sancify the kapu of the chiefs" (Malo 1994:154); wood used for cremating bodies of outlaws (Little and Skolmen 1989:266); wood for kua kuku (kapa anvil) (Krauss 1993:62).

PROPAGATION/CULTIVATION

  • The fruit of Styphelia tameiameiae is a round red, pink, or white drupe which is a fleshy fruit with a hard pit like a peach. The drupe is about 1/4 inch in diameter. It has red-orange flesh containing 5 to 8 small, pale brown seeds.
  • Styphelia tameiameiae is a difficult species to grow from seed. Germination rates are very low and the seedlings are slow growing. The seeds have to be removed from the pulp. One approach recommended by Stratton's informants is to gently crack the fruit with a hammer. The seeds need to be removed from the fruit and soaked in vinegar for 20 minutes. After this, the seeds are soaked in 120 degree F water for 2 hours.
  • The other procedure suggested in Stratton et al is to ripen the fruits in a plastic bag. This softens the pulp making the seeds easier to clean. After ripening, the fruit flesh is removed by either placing the fruits in a fine strainer under running water or breaking up the fruit by hand in a bowl of water. The lighter pulp floats and can be poured off. The seeds should then be soaked either in hot water for a few hours or in room temperature water for 24 to 48 hours. After soaking, the seeds are placed in 5% acetic acid (vinegar) for 5 minutes and then rinsed thoroughly.
  • The treated seeds should be planted 1/8 to 1/2 inch deep in a shallow container. Use a well-drained planting medium such as a mixture of 3 parts #2 perlite to 1 part Sunshine Mix #4 or 1 part peat to 1 part perlite to 1 part cinder. Keep the planting medium moist and place the containers in a shaded area. Placing them in a covered area will allow better control of soil moisture and prevent rain damage. After germination, gradually acclimatize the seedlings to full sun.
  • Even with these treatments, germination time ranges from 1 to 6 months with a 50% germination rate. Untreated seeds have a germination time of 4 to 9 months and a very low germination rate.
  • Best germination is obtained using fresh seed. Stratton suggests that if it is necessary to store the seed, it should be cleaned, air dried and placed in a paper bag or envelope. It can then be stored in an airtight container with dessicant in a cool place at 25% relative humidity, or in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
  • Criley examined the embryos in seeds of Styphelia tameiameiae to determine if immature embryos were a reason for difficult germination. However, he found that the embryos were developed in mature fruit. Criley also noted that Ted Radovich had successfully cultured Styphelia tameiameiae seed aseptically. Criley 1999; Lamb 1981; Stratton 1998; Wagner 1990)
  • Stratton et al suggest that 12 inch air layers may be successful. (Stratton 1998) [Data from Herring, E. C., & Criley, R. A. (2003).
